There is a lack of cohesive solutions that ensure optimal and ethical care of patients with autism during healthcare encounters. The CARE app innovatively bridges special education and healthcare, by facilitating meaningful collaboration between HCPs and families and supporting the application of evidence-based practices (EBPs) utilized in educational settings, to medical encounters with the goal of engaging the patient in the medical visit, preventing and minimizing challenging behaviors, and thereby improving patient- and family-centered care.
A central feature is the Snapshot, which collects targeted information to develop a patient profile. The Snapshot collects information on methods of communication by and to the patient (e.g., verbal, sign language, communication board), triggers (e.g., touch, sensory processing deficits, specific procedures), behaviors (e.g., stereotypy, aggressions, elopement), and reinforcers (e.g., toys, food). This provides HCPs with key information to facilitate the medical visit in a way that is responsive to the patient's needs.
This information further facilitates personalization of the patient’s medical encounter by assisting HCPs with selecting and applying EBPs that are readily accessible within the CARE app. These EBPs include social stories for a broad array of different medical procedures, modifiable visual schedules of the medical encounter, and assistive technologies for communication.
